Miller's Kids Fund 5k Kickoff

September 5, 2025

Running for Research 2026

I am thrilled to announce that this year we will be raising money for two trials. One of the

trials will be done by our PhD student, Shaneice Urbina, who will be looking at body

composition and metabolic markers in adults with PWS who have continued hormone

replacement (growth hormone, sex hormones) vs those who have not continued

hormone replacement therapy. She is looking to determine if the difference in muscle

mass and metabolic health between these individuals. Her findings could help with the

attempt to get FDA to approve growth hormone therapy for adults with PWS.

The second trial was conceived by our beloved Michael Tan, RD. We will be using

functional brain MRI scans, hormone measurements, and a fruit called the Miracle Berry

to determine if sweet taste is the primary driver of appetite and weight gain in individuals

with PWS. We will be using siblings and/or parents as controls for this trial to allow

comparison between those with PWS and those without it, as we suspect that sweet-

taste is a significant driver of appetite and weight gain in typically developing individuals

as well.

Please register for the event and join us in Gainesville on March 14, 2026 at Veteran’s

Memorial Park. Website for registration and updates on the event is: millerskidsfund.org.

We look forward to seeing everyone!!
